Lair Bosses — The Right Way to Hunt Uniques
If the unique your build needs refuses to drop, the answer is not more random loot — it is farming Lair Bosses. Each boss has its own drop table, so you can target exactly what you want.
What Lair Bosses are
Endgame bosses summoned at lairs across Sanctuary. Iconic Diablo demons — Varshan, Duriel, Andariel, Belial — arranged as a ladder: the spoils from the lower bosses become the summoning materials for the higher ones.
- Lower bosses — Cheap to summon and good for targeting uniques by slot.
- Higher bosses — Duriel and Andariel tier. These are the ones that drop mythic uniques.
Each boss's summoning materials and drop table are shown in the lair-entrance tooltip in game. The materials accumulate naturally while farming Helltide, Nightmare Dungeons and seasonal content.
Before you go
- Survive the one-shots — Boss fights are about dodging patterns. Sort out maximum life and resistances first.
- Check your single-target damage — If your build is AoE-focused, work out a boss rotation. Each build guide includes boss-fight notes.
- Bank your materials — Save up several summons' worth and run them back to back; it saves a lot of travel time.
An efficient farming loop
- Run Helltide and Nightmare Dungeons to gather summoning materials
- Pick the boss whose table holds the unique you want and summon it repeatedly
- Once you have the uniques you need, move up to the higher bosses for mythics
Group farming works well too — party members taking turns to summon means more kills per material. To see which boss drops which unique, search by class and slot in the item codex.
Season 14 tie-in — Mythic Uniques 3.0
This season, every unique can be upgraded to mythic (see the Season 14 guide). That makes every unique you pull off a boss both an upgrade candidate and upgrade material. Seasonal Lair Boss kills can also award mythics outright, so boss farming is unusually valuable this season.
Common mistakes
- Hoarding materials until the season ends — Summoning materials exist to be spent. Run bosses as they accumulate.
- Only farming on low difficulty — Reward quality scales with difficulty. Once kills feel routine, push it up.
- Farming without checking the drop table — Repeatedly killing a boss that cannot drop your item is the worst possible waste. Read the lair tooltip first.
